Wigan moved to within four points of West Brom after Nathan Ellington's late goal handed them a 1-0 home win over Walsall at the JJB Stadium.
Ipswich climbed above Sheffield United following a 2-0 success over Preston while The Blades crashed to struggling Derby County.
The East Anglian side left it late with Tommy Miller and Ian Westlake netting the key goals, while Neil Warnock's side lost after taking the lead.
