Eddie Lewis rounded off Preston's fine 3-0 win over Reading.Reading's promotion charge came unstuck as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat against Preston at Deepdale.
Steve Coppell's side had enjoyed a happy Christmas thanks to successive home wins against QPR and Watford, but they were well beaten by North End.
Patrick Agyemang and Eddie Lewis scored for Billy Davies' side either side of an own goal from Reading's Andy Hughes.
Preston have been impressive at home this season and they were set on their way to a ninth victory on their own ground by Agyemang's first goal since his move from Gillingham.
The £350,000 signing opened the scoring on 17 minutes when he headed in Lewis' free-kick, as Preston responded in perfect fashion to a bright start from the visitors.
The home side doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Hughes inexplicably diverted Youl Mawene's hopeful punt past Marcus Hahnemann at his near post.
Agyemang and Lewis then combined for the third North End goal, with Agyemang unselfishly setting up the United States international for a simple tap-in.
Andy Lonergan made good late saves from James Harper and Nicky Forster to protect Preston's second consecutive clean sheet.
