Striker Dave Kitson earned Reading a point away at Crewe.Dave Kitson halted Reading's slump with an equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Crewe, although the Royals are now without a win in nine games.
The striker had not scored since November but, in the second game of his comeback from injury, he levelled in the 70th minute after Luke Varney had put Crewe ahead.
Lloyd Owusu and Paul Brooker both came close for Reading in the opening minutes before Ivar Ingimarsson failed to clear a David Vaughan pass and Varney pounced.
He could have had a second goal, but his shot flashed wide while Kitson headed over the bar at the other end.
In a scrappy second half, Kitson was quieter until he capitalised on a Clayton Ince error to score his 13th goal of the season.
Ingimarsson provided the assist by winning a header as the Crewe keeper charged off his line and Kitson rammed the ball home in a crowded penalty area.
But Reading still needed keeper Marcus Hahnemann to save from David Vaughan to preserve their point.
