Steve Coppell praised Shane Long for his goal in Reading's 3-2 win over Burnley.
Steve Coppell praised Shane Long for the striker's stunning goal in Reading's 3-2 FA Cup third round win over Burnley.
Long was making a rare start in the Reading team this season, but responded with a fine goal to put the Premiership club 2-0 up.
He nipped past Burnley keeper Brian Jensen on the right side of the area before volleying in from an extremely acute angle.
"To score from that position was great, he's a quick player and it's not just physical speed, it's also speed of thought," said Coppell.
"Not too many people would have tried to score from there."
Coppell also handed Adam Federici a debut in goal and he was happy with the keeper's performance at The Madejski Stadium.
He added: "I thought he made a couple of excellent saves."
Though Steve Cotterill was pleased with how his team recovered from being 3-0 down, the Burnley boss was unhappy with his players' defending.
Cotterill said: "We were never going to get anything from the game with that defending, but, having said that, if we'd taken our chances, we could have won the game 5-3 or more.
"It was a spirited fightback, but too late in the day, as we gave away three poor goals.
"I'm probably more disappointed with our defending than our finishing.
"The Long goal was a superb finish and I don't want to take anything away from him, but I'm talking about the build-up to it, that was very poor from our point of view."
