The full-back has been discussing a new deal at The Madejski Stadium and has also been linked with a switch to West Ham United.
Shorey, who made his England debut in the June friendly with Brazil, has admitted to being flattered by interest from The Hammers.
Reading boss Coppell is aware other clubs will be eyeing up the defender and outlined his determination to hang on to the 26-year-old.
"It can be a dangerous game trying to commit to players," said Coppell in the Sunday Express.
"Just as much as they want to commit to you, they also see the opportunity to win things at other clubs.
"It's a delicate balancing act for him, but he knows we are desperate for him to stay with us.
"He's still got a couple of years on his contract, but we want to reward him for what he's done and make sure he doesn't start looking elsewhere."
