Full-back becomes Reading's first signing of the summer

Reading have signed Scunthorpe left-back Marcus Williams on a three-year contract. Williams, who played nearly 200 games for the Iron, is Reading's first signing of the summer. Reading manager Brian McDermott was delighted to bring in the left-back as he plans for next season. "We are really pleased to get him," said McDermott. "I've known about him for a number of years, he's got good pace, he's young but has played a lot of games already in his career. "We wanted to fill this position quickly and I am really pleased he has decided to come to us. Scunthorpe had offered him a decent contract but he was keen to come here. He's impressed with the club and I know he will enjoy it here and do well. "We like our full backs to get forward, that's how we play, and he will fit into that. There was interest from other clubs but to be fair to him and his agent they didn't speak with anyone else, they made their decision and felt we were the right club for him."

Brilliant move

Williams is relishing the prospect of moving to the Madejski Stadium and admits McDermott played a big part in his decision to leave Scunthorpe. "It's brilliant for me, I'm delighted to sign for such a big club with real potential. I'm really happy, so are my family, and I can't wait to get started. "I've known about the interest only for a couple of weeks and it was fascinating news, I was delighted to get the call. "As soon as I met the manager I knew this was the right place, this is where I want to be and I'm excited. He has really helped me feel welcome, which is nice, especially when you're coming down from home. "It's pleasing to know the manager is willing to support you in every way, on and off the pitch and I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of the team and helping Reading to get results."
