Deepdale boss Craig Brown is keen to bolster his attack, having lost top scorer Ricardo Fuller for the rest of the season through injury.
Brown is eager to bring in some new faces as he looks to end the side's poor run of form of three successive defeats
"I'm set to freshen things up. After three games without a goal we will have to look at supplementing the squad," said Brown.
Former Celtic star Burchill has failed to hold down a regular spot in the Portsmouth side this season and Pompey boss Harry Redknapp admitted he is willing to listen to offers for the pacey forward.
"Mark needs somewhere to play and I'll listen to offers," said Redknapp.
"If the opportunity comes along for him, I won't stand in his way."
Brown knows all about Burchill having handed him his Scotland debut against Bosnia two years ago and sees him as an ideal signing for North End.
Meanwhile, Preston have offered former Derby star Brian O'Neil a short-term deal at Deepdale after being released at Pride Park.
Brown has also recalled Brian Barry-Murphy from his loan spell at Hartlepool.
