A packed City Ground was eagerly anticipating a fierce East Midlands battle between the two old rivals but it was one-way traffic as the visiting side were swept away by Forest.
Paul Hart's Forest side were looking to bounce back after defeat at Brighton and did it in style against their fierce rivals with a convincing win.
Marlon Harewood headed Forest in front after 13 minutes and Darren Huckerby doubled their lead just two minutes later when David Johnson's header rebounded off the crossbar.
Harewood grabbed his second from the penalty spot four minutes after half time to seal a comfortable win over John Gregory's struggling Rams who are now just eight points outside the Division One relegation zone.
Forest restore their play-off hopes as they go back into fifth spot in the table and still with a game in hand over most of their nearest rivals.
Harry Redknapp's Pompey side stay on course for The Premiership after another comfortable victory as they swept Coventry aside with a 4-0 drubbing at Highfield Road.
The Sky Blues made the better start but fell behind when Gary Caldwell put through his own net after 14 minutes and the leaders never looked back.
With Tim Sherwood pulling the strings, Pompey soon doubled their lead just three minutes after their first when Steve Stone eventually finished off a fine move before Kevin Harper added an excellent third on 23 minutes.
The mercurial Paul Merson added a fourth goal in the second half to keep Pompey marching on towards The Premiership and restore their five-point lead over Leicester City in second.
