The French full back was one of a number of options pursued by Harry Redknapp and also turned down the opportunity to join Paris Saint Germain.
Redknapp made a fruitless chase for a left-sided defender before the transfer window closed, with the likes of Ian Harte, Paul Konchesky and Juan Pablo Sorin (who joined PSG) all failing to fill the void left by Matthew Taylor's continued absence.
Brechet left French champions Lyon as a wanted man, with plenty of interest in his signature.
"There was the Portsmouth trail but only as a simple loan," Brechet revealed.
"So I only had a choice between PSG and Internazionale.
"It is true, at a certain time, I was close to joining Paris. But, when things became more serious with Internazionale, it became my priority.
"This is because they are one of the best European clubs, and, once again, have a big team this season.
"(Hector) Cuper is a great coach, and I consider it a privilege to train with a boy like (Fabio) Cannavaro."
