Pana pull plug on Aloisi deal

Panathinaikos have pulled out of a deal to sign Australian striker John Aloisi.

Panathinaikos have pulled out of a deal to sign Australian striker John Aloisi.

The Greeks had agreed a two-year deal with the hit-man, but pulled the plug having been left unsatisfied with the results of his medical.

Tests are understood to have shown knee ligament damage and Pana have decided to withdraw their contract offer.

"After the conclusion of the medicals, Panathinaikos have decided not to complete the acquisition of Australian player John Aloisi," stated a Pana spokesperson.

Aloisi is a free agent having come to the end of his contract with Spanish side Osasuna and had attracted the interest of a host of teams including his former club Portsmouth.

He could now, once again, become a target for Pompey following the collapse of his move to Greece although Osasuna, who offered him a contract extension, may also move for him.

Pana are now thought to have turned their attention to Argentine striker Bernardo Romeo.

Romeo is back at Hamburg after spending the second half of last season at Mallorca, but admits he is open to a move to Greece.

"My agent has contacts with the Greek club and I am going to do the same," he told Morgenpost.

"If their offer and the circumstances satisfy me, then the things can go on very soon."
