The Colombian international midfielder has already been granted a work permit and has sealed his £1.6 million move from Once Caldas.
The 28-year-old has joined up with his Pompey team-mates for training as Alain Perrin continues to build his own side for the coming season.
VIafara arrives in England on a high after winning the Copa Libertadores with Once Caldas, and hopes to raise Pompey's profile in his native Colombia.
Perrin is looking to strengthen his goalkeeping department and, as reported on skysports.com, Italian shot-stopper Emanuele Belardi has arrived at Fratton Park.
The 28-year-old Reggina goalkeeper will be put through his paces at Portsmouth before Perrin decides if he is worthy of a contract offer.
Pompey skipper Arjan de Zeeuw is delighted with the new additions to the squad, and is not worried about fighting for his own place in the side.
"They've brought in three players so far and I'm sure they'll want to sign more," he told The Portsmouth News.
"We've got quite a few people for the centre back positions, but competition is what makes teams strong.
"As a player it's all about how you respond to competition - and I usually respond well."
