Milan confirms Gomes interest

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric has confirmed the club's interest in Nuno Gomes.

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric has confirmed the club's interest in Nuno Gomes.

Pompey are in the market for a new striker and have been linked with the likes of Nicolas Anelka and Emile Heskey.

The Fratton Park outfit are now thought to have switched their attentions to Benfica star Gomes.

Gomes enjoyed a fine season with Benfica last term netting 15 goals and helping them reach the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Pompey, funded by Russian millionaire Sacha Gaydamak, are set to be busy in the transfer market this summer and money will be no object in their desire to bring in top names.

Benfica's director general Jose Veiga revealed earlier this week that they had received no offers for Gomes, but Mandaric has indicated that Pompey are ready to test their resolve to hang onto the Portuguese international.

"For now, I can only say that we have interest in Nuno Gomes," Mandaric told Radio Renaissance.

"He is a quality player and we know there are more people interested in him."

Pompey could face competition from Premiership rivals West Ham and Tottenham for Gomes with both London clubs thought to watching developments in Lisbon.
