Mendes still smarting

Pedro Mendes has described Ben Thatcher's horror challenge on him as 'barbaric'.

Pedro Mendes has described Ben Thatcher's horror challenge on him as 'barbaric', as he prepares to come face-to-face with the man who left him unconscious and suffering a seizure.

The two players will be on opposite sides on Saturday for the first time since Thatcher's forearm smash that resulted in an eight-game ban for the then Manchester City defender back in September.

Now at Charlton, the left-back is sure to receive a vitriolic reception if he appears for his new club at Fratton Park on Saturday.

For Mendes, the horror of his hospital stay refuses to subside, and the Portuguese midfielder has again chastised Thatcher for his actions which resulted in a police investigation at the time.

"It is always shocking to see it," said Mendes in The Sun.

"It was over-aggressive, barbaric really.

"He asked for my pardon, he said he hadn't done it intentionally and wished me a quick recovery.

"It was the worst moment of my carer.

"I'd never had any serious injuries and it scared me a bit."
