Portsmouth's David Nugent is hoping a solid outing against Manchester United will strengthen his England credentials.

The former Preston ace failed to find the back of the net in Pompey's season-opener against Derby at Pride Park.

Nugent is set to make his home debut against The Red Devils on Wednesday and knows a goal would alert Steve McClaren

England have two crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers next month and the door is open for someone to feature with Wayne Rooney injured and Michael Owen lacking match practice.

Nugent netted on his England debut and is relishing the prospect of lining up against some of Europe's finest, if selected by McClaren.

"I've been in the England squad before and I want to be there again," he is quoted in the Sun.

"If I can score a few, I'm sure I'll get another chance. Manchester United is not a bad game to make your home debut in.

"If selected, I'm looking forward to testing myself against the best.

"It will be a great chance to catch the eye."
