David Nugent hopes his winner against Burnley will lead to more opportunities in the Portsmouth team.
The summer signing from Preston North End has struggled to make an impact at Pompey and has featured just once in the Premier League in the past month.
But he marked a starting role against Burnley in the Carling Cup third round by scoring the only goal of the tie midway through the second half.
And Nugent, who was linked with a swift exit from Fratton Park, is now keen for further chances to impress manager Harry Redknapp.
"This competition gives some of the players who haven't been playing that much a chance to prove themselves to the manager," said Nugent in the Daily Star.
"Obviously the priority is the League, but, as a striker, scoring goals is what gives you confidence, whatever the competition.
"Now I hope I get a few more opportunities to prove myself."
The England cap also has the backing of team-mate Sylvain Distin, who said: "I spoke to David before the game and told him not to worry if he missed five chances, as long as he scored one, that was all that mattered."
