Championship side Ipswich could complete a loan swoop for David Nugent next week - providing the player agrees to the switch.
The Portsmouth striker, who has one England cap, has failed to make an impression since heading to the south coast from Preston in the summer.
He is currently sidelined as he recovers from a hernia operation, but his opportunities are likely to be limited since Jermain Defoe and Milan Baros arrived at the club in the transfer window.
And with boss Harry Redknapp telling Nugent he is free to leave, a move to promotion hopefuls Ipswich could help kick-start his career.
"Portsmouth have been great about it and said that David can come here until the end of the season," said Ipswich manager Jim Magilton.
"David has an injury though at the moment and wants to get that right, so there will be two factors in his decision.
"One is when he considers himself to be match-fit and the second is whether he wants to come here or not.
"I don't expect an answer from him until next week, but it is a statement of intent that we have gone in for a player of his quality - a player who we believe can get us across the line."
