Gardner joined Spurs from Port Vale for £1 million, but this is not the first time that a team have attempted to bring the 19-year-old back to the Nationwide League, with Crewe failing in a loan bid for the player earlier in the season.
The young stopper is seen by many as a long-term replacement for England international Sol Campbell, who is yet to commit his future to Spurs, and he may get the chance to prove his credentials in the first-team sooner than expected.
Campbell has again been hit by injury, suffering with a hamstring problem, and is rated as doubtful for the trip to Everton this weekend, leaving Gardner pushing for a call-up to replace the big stopper in the Spurs back-line.
This will probably mean that any move from Stoke to take the youngster away from Spurs will be rejected, as George Graham will not want to be caught short of cover at the back, and Potters boss Gudjon Thordarson may now have to look elsewhere.
