The Republic of Ireland international went under the blade of Dr Richard Steadman at his Colorado clinic on Wednesday and the early prognosis indicates that he will be sidelined for a lengthy spell.
Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle was unable to hide his disappointment at the news, saying: "The problem occurred some time ago and rest was the first port of call for him.
"Unfortunately that did not give us the player back but the surgeon, who is the same one that treated Jamie Redknapp and Ronaldo, has identified what the problem is.
"He has told us they can get him right but that it will take four months. It is a major blow for us."
