The ex-Manchester United man, 38, was employed as a midfielder in the 2-1 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur at the Millennium Stadium and Cole believes the veteran Welshman can continue to defy age.
"I think he should carry on," said Cole. "Playing the way he played I can't see why he can't play on another year.
"He was fantastic. He's 38 years old and he ran around like he was 24.
"I thought he was brilliant and he rattled Darren Anderton early on and put him off his game.
"For me he bossed the game. He was a star man in midfield."
Hughes was due to hang up his boots at the end of the campaign to concentrate on managing Wales but his latest cup triumph with Rovers may persuade the no-nonsene forward to prolong his distinguished career.
