Both London clubs were taking a close look at Bologna striker Julio Cruz and he would have impressed the watching English scouts as he struck Bologna's equaliser in the 1-1 draw after an hour.
Spurs first came across Cruz in last month's Wales v Argentina friendly at The Millennium Stadium, when he struck the equaliser for his side.
Cruz has been with Bologna for two seasons after moving from Feyenoord, but he is out of contract next year and the Italians could cash in on him this summer.
West Ham also have a passing interest in the Argentine striker, but their main targets were thought to be playing for the home side.
Both Christian Amoruso and Alessandro Pierini were the men thought to be attracting East London club's interest.
25-year-old Amoruso is a player of undoubted quality and within the last year he has been the sibject of a bid from Juventus, which makes it seem unlikely that he will leave Serie A in the near future.
Pierini is a long-term target for The Hammers and it is likely they were just monitoring the player's current form.
