Meola, the national team's last line of defence in both the 1990 and 94 World Cups, has been hugely impressed with the rise of Blackburn keeper Freidel, who is currently enjoying the best year of his career both domestically and internationally.
Friedel has been widely touted as the best keeper in the English Premiership by teammates and opposition alike, and was selected ahead of Keller for the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and Korea.
Tottenham star Keller has made the number one jersey his own at White Hart Lane after initially taking over from the Neil Sullivan who was injured.
Meola hasn't got a favourite between the two, and insisted US boss Bruce Arena had a pleasant selection dilemma.
"If you are asking me who should start over the other one, it is not my decision. They are both great goalkeepers and both have a lot of games under their belt," said the Kansas City keeper.
"The one thing that Bruce can rest his hat on the fact that we don't have any problems in that position."
