The versatile 22-year-old is struggling to break into Spurs' starting XI and now the high-flying Bluebirds have launched an ambitious bid to land him.
"We are interested in bring Gary Doherty to Cardiff City," Lawrence said.
"It would have to be a loan deal to start with."
Doherty can play as either a central defender or as a striker, but Lawrence admits that if he landed the former Luton man he would use him in his back four.
"I see him mainly as a centre half," added Lawrence.
The ex-Middlesbrough man already knows Doherty well, having handed him his debut as a teenager at Luton.
Some sources in South Wales have suggested that Spurs could use Doherty to try and land Cardiff's own star striker Robert Earnshaw, or at least secure first refusal on him.
