Tottenham's Noureddine Naybet has a stark warning for Jermain Defoe.
Tottenham's experienced defender Noureddine Naybet has a stark warning for Jermain Defoe.
The England striker has been in excellent form this term and showed plenty of self-sacrifice to lead the line unselfishly during the well-earned draw at Chelsea on Sunday.
However, Naybet has given words of advice to the former West Ham hit-man.
"He still has a great margin to improve," the Moroccan told France Football.
"I know a lot of young players who got inflamed in Spain - people talked a lot about them.
"But they finally disappeared after fantastic things were said about them.
"Talent is not enough. The mind must follow the legs.
"Yes, Defoe has a lot of talent, but it is up to him to make it bear fruit."
The veteran stopper is enjoying life at White Hart Lane and is pleased to have made the move to England.
"Honestly, it was a dream for me to play in England and try a new adventure before the end of my career," he added.
"I knew I would find a French coach at Tottenham and players who speak French. Moreover, it is a club with a very, very great history in English football, but also in Europe."
Jacques Santini certainly seems to be getting his message across in North London.
"Quickly, the relationship between the players was very good," Naybet enthused. "We all adapted to each other.
"That's why, up to now, the results have been good.
"I think the key is to communicate. With Jacques Santini, we work a lot on tactics, but not only this of course.
"Technical work is also always important in our preparation. I can say it without reservation - I am delighted to work with him.
"We can't imagine ourselves becoming champions just like that, but our aim has to be to get qualification for the Uefa Cup.
"We have the means to achieve that."
