Martin Jol has played down speculation linking David Beckham with Spurs.Tottenham boss Martin Jol has played down speculation linking David Beckham with a move to North London.
The England skipper has recently cast doubts over his future in Spain after complaining of media intrusion and when coupled with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy's refusal to rule out the move, it would appear that a possible deal could be struck.
However, Jol has now moved to pour cold water on such talk - concluding that a move for the Real Madrid star is not an immediate priority.
''I don't think so,'' said Jol when quizzed on Beckham by Sky Sports News.
''I mean, it's all hypothetical but we already have a couple of good players in that position.
''David Beckham is a star player and he's playing for Real Madrid, so why should I think about that sort of thing?''
Meanwhile, Jol has backed Spurs striker Jermain Defoe to be the man capable of stepping into the boots of Michael Owen - when the striker serves his suspension in England's next World Cup qualifier.
''I hope so. Defoe is a similar player to Owen,'' continued Jol.
''He is always a second striker so hopefully for him he will be in the team but you don't know what Sven wants to do in England's next game.
''But hopefully, for him and for us, I hope he will play.''
Tottenham's Thimothee Atouba has denied a charge of violent conduct following an off-the-ball incident with Manchester City's Joey Barton, with the defender's case to be heard by The Football Association on Friday.
If found guilty of the charge it is likely that the Cameroon international will be issued with a three-match suspension.
