Tottenham are believed to have made a late bid to try and snatch Barcelona's Gerard.Tottenham are believed to have made a late bid to try and snatch Barcelona midfielder Gerard from the clutches of Monaco.
The 26-year-old is to leave Camp Nou on a free transfer as his contract expires at the end of June.
He never really justified the é¼20 million Barca spent to prise him back from Valencia in the summer of 2000, and played only a bit-part role in the club's title success this term.
Despite his lack of opportunities there has been no shortage of interest in the midfielder, but it appeared that Ligue 1 side Monaco had practically clinched a deal to sign him with the player himself admitting he was attracted by a switch to the Stade Louis II.
"I am attracted by Monaco," he stated. "I have had several phone calls with Didier Deschamps.
"He talked about his interest and I stated to him that I am tempted by the idea to join ASM.
"Several teams are following me, there are Spanish and Italian teams, but Monaco is the one which has shown the greatest interest."
However, it appears that Spurs are ready to launch a late offensive to hijack Monaco's deal.
The opportunity to sign the one-time Spanish international on a free transfer clearly appeals to the North Londoners who have been monitoring players throughout Europe.
They could, though, have left their bid too late as some reports in France claim that the player has already penned a three-year deal with the Principality outfit.
Meanwhile, Spurs midfielder Pedro Mendes is being linked with a rapid return to former club Porto after struggling to make an impression in his first season at White Hart Lane.
