The Tottenham winger picked up a small stress fracture during Spurs's opening day 2-0 victory at Portsmouth.
The former Crystal Palace star will now be sidelined for around two weeks.
"Wayne has a little stress fracture of his foot and will be out for at least a couple of weeks," said head coach Martin Jol.
"With all the other injuries - Robbie Keane is better, Ledley King still has a minor problem and Michael Brown and Sean Davis still need a couple of weeks.''
Meanwhile, Edgar Davids looks set to be involved against Middlesbrough at the weekend and could very well make his Spurs debut after recovering from a minor knock.
"Edgar could be back on Saturday, but that is what we said last week," Jol continued on Sky Sports News.
"Then there was a collision in training and we had to wait, but I think he will be fit and has a good chance to play on Saturday."
