Redknapp hails Brazilian after Europa League clean sheet

Harry Redknapp has told Heurelho Gomes he remains a part of his plans at Tottenham following a terrific performance from the Brazilian goalkeeper against Rubin Kazan. Gomes had been the regular No.1 at White Hart Lane prior to Brad Friedel's arrival over the summer, but has now slipped out of the team and appears to be third choice behind Carlo Cudicini. Redknapp has previously admitted that Gomes is unhappy with the situation and indicated he could leave Spurs in the January transfer window. However, Redknapp still hopes that will not be the case after handing Gomes a rare start in Thursday's Europa League clash. The keeper responded with an impressive display to help Tottenham beat Rubin 1-0, with Redknapp insisting after the final whistle that he could stay with the club.

Top class

"I was pleased for Gomes. He was great tonight," said the manager. "Carlo Cudicini has been playing well and so has Brad but I played the big man tonight and he did well. "I would like to think that Gomes still has a big future here. "But he wants to play more, obviously, and at the moment he is disappointed that Brad has come in, but Brad has done great. "Gomes is top class, when he is on his game he is a great keeper."
