Agent says deal for defender is close

The transfer saga surrounding Jan Vertonghen and Tottenham Hotspur could soon be resolved after the player's agent revealed they are close to agreeing a deal. Ajax value their captain at €15million but it is thought that Spurs are reluctant to pay that for the defender, whose contract expires next summer. But Mustapha Nakhli, who represents the Belgian, believes the clubs are getting closer. He said: "I hope it will be this week. I think it will. We are talking to Tottenham." Vertonghen stated his desire to move to North London last week, saying that the club's absence from the UEFA Champions League had not put him off the move. He would undoubtedly be a good addition to the Tottenham ranks, considering he has the versatility to operate at left- back or in midfield, as well as centre-back . And Nakhli appeared to criticise Ajax for holding out for a bigger fee for a player who has less than a year to run on his current deal. He continued: "Fifteen million? Jan has a contract until mid-2013. So what do you think?"
