Jan Vertonghen has expressed satisfaction with his performance against West Bromwich Albion but was disappointed to only draw 1-1 on his Premier League debut.
Vertonghen made his first competitive appearance for Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday and looked set to get off to a winning start after Benoit Assou-Ekotto scored in the 74th minute.
However, James Morrison's late leveller denied Spurs victory and the Belgian defender admitted after the match that he was not able to celebrate an encouraging individual display.
"I was pleased with my performance," said Vertonghen, who showed a willingness to get involved in Tottenham's attacking play.
"I did a few good things, a few bad things, but we cannot be happy with the result.
"I like getting forward. I can drive the ball into midfield. That's what the manager has asked me to do.
"We have a home game against Norwich next Saturday and we have to win that one. It would be good for our confidence."
Andre Villas-Boas says he is happy for Vertonghen to get forward whenever it is possible, as Tottenham look to fill the void at centre-back left by Ledley King's retirement.
He said: "I think Jan used his talents sensibly and he is very comfortable with the ball.
"As long as it's within reason and the team is balanced, you have to allow players to express themselves.
"With Ledley gone, you could say we lose an extremely good player, but we still have our fair share of experience and talent."
