Belgium are hoping to make it through to next summer's World Cup and are currently level on points with Croatia at the top of qualifying Group A, which also includes Scotland and Wales.
They still have work to do to reach the tournament but Vertonghen feels they should be considered one of the dark horses for success if they qualify.
While Belgium may not have a record in recent years to suggest they could compete for glory and Vertonghen accepts they need more experience, he is excited by their potential.
"First we must qualify, then we can start thinking about trying to go all the way," said the Tottenham Hotspur defender.
"As a team, we still have a lot of growing to do, but if you look at individual ability, only Spain and Germany are better than us at the moment (in Europe).
"I think we would back ourselves against anyone else."
Belgium boss Marc Wilmots, currently preparing for Friday's qualifier against Serbia, feels it is important for a team to have belief in their own ability.
"Having ambition is good but both Germany and Italy go to every World Cup with the goal of reaching the final," he said in the Daily Record. "That's the right spirit."
