Roberto Soldado scored his first Premier League goal in more than two months to hand them a 1-0 victory and keep the team in touch with the top four.
And defender Dawson hailed the side's win as a leap in the right direction as they kept the heat on fourth-placed Manchester City.
"(It was) massive. We knew after the disappointment away at Norwich last week we needed to bounce back in the Premier League and we did that," the defender told Sky Sports.
"It was a hard-fought win, which we knew it was going to be playing a team fighting for their lives but we went out and performed and got a good win."
Dawson was delighted for his team-mate Soldado, who justified the faith shown in him by manager Tim Sherwood by ending his goal drought in a tight win.
It was the Spain international striker's first goal since December and his first in open play all season.
"It was massive (relief)," admitted Dawson. "The lads have been wishing it in for him because he's a top lad. He's come in and settled so we're just delighted to see him get a goal.
"The fans have been behind him every bit of the way and so have the players. He's a top player. It takes time to settle in so it's great to see him get on the scoresheet.
"We'll never give up (for fourth spot). That was our aim at the start of the season. It's never changed in the dips we've had and we're still fighting."
