Former Crystal Palace forward Matt Jansen was the tormentor-in-chief, as he scored two and created the other for veteran Welsh forward Mark Hughes, but Preston roared out after the break and almost claimed a point.
Jansen opened the scoring after five minutes, collecting a throw-in from Craig Hignett before rifling a shot through Sean Gregan`s legs and into the net.
On 12 minutes, the lead was doubled when Jansen escaped down the left before crossing for Hughes to slam home.
Preston were left reeling on 18 minutes, when Hughes flicked on a corner for Jansen to head home at the far post.
The first-half advantage did not flatter the home side, as they had a number of other chances to add to their lead.
Preston, with a defensive reshuffle making them look more secure, roared out after the break and Jon Macken reduced the arrears on 54 minutes.
With 20 minutes remaining, The Lilywhites were awarded a penalty and Mark Rankine beat Brad Friedel to ensure a frantic finish.
However, Rovers survived to claim the points.
