VILLA BOUNCE BACK FROM EURO EXIT

ASTON VILLA bounced back from their midweek Uefa Cup exit by moving up into fourth place in the Premiership thanks to a 2-0 win over Blackburn.

Goals from Juan Pablo Angel and Darius Vassell kept John Gregory's side unbeaten in the league and killed off a Blackburn side that had the better of things in the first half.

Villa looked tired in the first period at Villa Park, and Graeme Souness's men had the best of the chances.

The visitors` best chance came when Peter Schmeichel was forced to save well from David Dunn's 20-yard shot, with the rebound falling to Matt Jansen who put his effort wide of the post.

The hosts came out firing on all cylinders after the interval, and went ahead within a minute as Angel scored his fourth goal in four games.

The Colombian latched on to Lee Hendrie's through ball before dispatching the ball past American keeper Brad Friedel for his sixth goal of the season.

The game was settled just after the hour mark when Blackburn had appeals for a penalty turned down when Dunn went down under Mark Delaney's challenge.

Garry Flitcroft then sent a half-volley past Schmeichel from the edge of the box only to see his effort hit the crossbar.

A minute later Villa settled the game when Angel again ran on to a Hendrie pass and his lob was converted by Vassell at the far post.
