McCarthy's hand has primarily been forced by injuries to several players, while he is also presenting fringe members of his squad with a last chance to stake a claim in the World Cup squad, after making seven changes to his side for the clash at Lansdowne Road.
Among those contenders for a berth in the 23-man party for the Far East is Southampton's utility man Rory Delap, who has stated he would play anywhere just to be in the team.
He has received the nod on the right-hand side of midfield in the absence of the injured Jason McAteer.
The Irish coach retains just four players from the starting line-up that beat Denmark in their previous friendly.
Leeds United duo Ian Harte and Robbie Keane, along with Mark Kinsella and Damien Duff are the quartet while Coventry City defender Gary Breen has been given the captain's armband with Roy Keane injured.
Team: Given (Newcastle); Finnan (Fulham), O'Brien (Newcastle), Breen (Coventry), Harte (Leeds); Delap (Southampton), Healy (Celtic), Kinsella (Charlton), Kilbane (Sunderland); Duff (Blackburn), Keane (Leeds).
