The Rovers manager is keen to recruit a new left back, and made Celta Vigo star Juanfran one of his top targets, only for the transfer to stall.
"That deal is now dead in the water," admitted the Scot.
Instead, Rovers are now looking to add Gresko to their books as they pursue glory in both cup competitions, and endeavour to improve their standing in The Premiership.
"We believe we have an agreement with Parma," revealed Souness.
"It has been difficult trying to get someone in, but there are some quality players at this club and, to improve that, we have to get someone better.
"We could have gone out and signed any old left back, but we want someone who will make us better."
The 25-year-old Gresko joined Parma from Internazionale last July in a swap deal that took Matias Almeyda to Giuseppe Meazza.
The Slovakian international was formerly with Bayer Leverkusen, and has previously attracted attention from Middlesbrough.
Agent Beppe Accardo has confirmed to planetfootball.com that the deal is a loan move, and his client is thinking over the transfer this week.
"Parma have now agreed to the deal asked by Blackburn, which is a loan," he told planetfootball.com.
"We are now putting the transfer to the player, and we are waiting to see what his answer will be.
"We don't think this should be a problem, and hope that a deal will be done within the next few days."
