The former Liverpool shot-stopper pulled out of the USA's Confederations Cup and Gold Cup campaigns as he feels he needed to recharge the batteries after a long hard season at Ewood Park.
Friedel believes he made the right decision not to play over the summer and feels he will reap the benefits this season.
"It was the first time in 11 years I took the whole summer off. I needed to rest my body and mind," said Friedel.
"I feel like I'm 19-years-old right now. I feel really fresh which I have not felt in many, many years going into a full season.
"I definitely made the right decision to take the summer off."
Rovers boss Graeme Souness has hailed the influence of the giant goalkeeper and admitted he could not put a price on him.
"Brad must be worth 12 to 15 points to us because he is such a good goalkeeper," said Souness.
"I just couldn't put a price on his head, he has to be the best signing I've ever made."
Friedel believes he can get even better at Ewood Park as he feels he is not yet in his prime.
"As a goalkeeper, I'm in a fortunate position where I can better all the time," added Friedel.
"A lot of goalkeepers, providing you keep healthy, get better with age.
"You can reach a peak of your physical ability, but your mental ability can always get better.
"So there's a lot of room for improvement. I think I've still got a lot to learn."
