The former Manchester United and England striker was axed from Saturday's 1-0 victory at Middlesbrough and with rookie strike force Paul Gallagher and Jon Stead impressing, Cole could face a prolonged spell on the touchline.
Cole has struggled to recapture the form that prompted Souness to empty the Ewood Park coffers with a £7.5 million transfer two years ago, but he is still the club's top scorer this season with seven goals.
Souness is likely to persevere with his inexperienced strike force for tonight's visit of Newcastle United, but Cole insists he has nothing to prove in England's top-flight.
''I am the second leading goalscorer in Premiership history and I don't feel as though I need to prove myself,'' Cole told the Daily Star.
''If a manager feels that Jon Stead can do a job for him, then fair enough.
''But I'm still confident in my own ability.''
Jon Stead will be hoping to continue his excellent start to life in The Premiership, after registering his first Blackburn goal on his debut at the weekend.
A recent acquisition from Third Division side Huddersfield Town, 20-year-old Stead made up the top flight's youngest partnership when he was paired with impressive youngster Paul Gallagher at The Riverside, who is just 18-years-old.
