Stead, a transfer window £1 million buy from Third Division Huddersfield, has now hit five goals for Rovers and guided them eight points away from relegation with just three games left.
"Every week I am trying to play down the lad's contribution. But I am going to have to start telling the truth," Souness said.
"His goals have been vital for us, his effort has been vital for us and his general contribution has been outstanding, I couldn't have asked for any more."
Souness refused to accept that Rovers were safe from the drop, adding: "That was a big win for us, it is three wins back to back and seven away from home.
"It is no surprise that this has happened when we have had Lorenzo Amoruso back after his five months out with a knee injury.
"We are not over the finishing line yet, but this is a big result.
"We are not mathematically safe yet and I will not start saying we are because if something goes wrong I'm made to look a schmuck.
"Until we are completely safe that is how I will handle it.
"All our statistics say we should not be where we are. We have scored more than most but we defend like women at times. But not in the last few games.
"We were looking for big players to stand up and be counted, and they have done that. They deserve a great deal of credit."
