The Republic of Ireland international sustained the injury during the 1-0 win at Deepdale on Saturday.
Reid is set to have scans on the injury to discover the extent of the problem and he faces a race against time to be fit for the big kick-off with the season beginning in two weeks.
Better news on the injury front is that veteran defender Craig Short has recovered from injury, while keeper Brad Friedel is winning his battle to be fit to face West Brom.
The U.S. goalkeeper picked up a thigh injury on the club's pre-season tour and was rated doubtful for the start of the season.
Rovers boss Graeme Souness is hopeful that Friedel will recover in time.
"He'll continue to have treatment and I hope he'll be fit," said Souness.
