Sunderland are keen on signing Blackburn striker Jon Stead.Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy has revealed he is keen on signing Blackburn striker Jon Stead.
McCarthy is looking for a new striker to bolster his attacking options after losing Kevin Kyle to injury.
Kyle faces missing the rest of the season with a longstanding hip injury.
McCarthy is a big fan of Stead and tried to sign the England Under-21 international before he made the move to Blackburn last January.
"I've been looking at him all along," admitted McCarthy.
"We're not standing still, and we're looking at who to bring in all the time."
Stead has primarily been employed as a substitute since Mark Hughes took over at Ewood Park.
However, the former Huddersfield star has returned to the starting line-up in recent weeks following an injury to Jay Bothroyd and it seems unlikely Rovers would be willing to let him leave.
McCarthy, meanwhile, has set his sights on helping Sunderland beat Crystal Palace in their FA Cup third round meeting this weekend.
"We want to beat Palace, they're a premiership outfit," said McCarthy.
"We're not trying to do anything different except play as well as we can.
"We are not making wholesale changes to team, but we have to because of injuries and suspensions and other than that it'll be a strong side as we're wanting to win the game."
