Stead has Rovers future

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes insists Jon Stead has a future at Ewood Park.

Blackburn Rovers manager Mark Hughes insists Jon Stead has a future at Ewood Park, amid interest from Sunderland.

Stead has struggled for Rovers this season and is still waiting to open his goals account for the 2004/05 campaign.

He had largely been a substitute during Hughes' early weeks in charge but has started Rovers' last three matches.

That did not deter Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy from expressing his interest in taking Stead to The Stadium of Light.

McCarthy was keen on the England Under-21 international during the last January transfer window before the striker opted for Blackburn upon leaving Huddersfield Town.

But McCarthy's eagerness to sign Stead 12 months on is again unlikely to bear fruit as Hughes feels the forward is now making his mark under his tenure.

Hughes said: "Jon is working hard to turn his season around here."
