Robert Earnshaw is unsure about the reasons behind Robbie Savage's retirement.Robert Earnshaw admits he is unsure what the underlying reasons were behind Robbie Savage's bust-up with Wales coach John Toshack.
Savage retired from international football last week after learning he would not be selected for Wales' World Cup qualifying double-header against Austria.
The Blackburn Rovers midfielder had a strained relationship with Toshack, who replaced Mark Hughes as Wales coach last autumn.
Pacey striker Earnshaw admits he is unsure why Savage and Toshack were at loggerheads and concedes it is a strange situation.
"It's strange really," Earnshaw told Sky Sports News. "No one really knows what is really going on there.
"I think he wasn't going to be involved and he's retired because of that as well you know.
"They are both headstrong and both think they are right."
Earnshaw links up with the Wales squad for the two key qualifiers on the back of a quick-fire hat-trick for West Brom at Charlton at the weekend.
With several untested players in the Wales squad, the diminutive front man admits there will have to be plenty of work put in on the training ground this week.
The former Cardiff City ace also affirmed the importance of winning the games with Austria if Wales are to revive their hopes of reaching the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
He added: "We'd like more time together because there's a few new faces in there.
"This week we will have a lot of training which will be better but when the game comes next Saturday we will be ready then.
"We have to win no matter what. We're probably heading for second spot and we will settle for that now because it looks like it's going to be very tough.
"But we always have that belief that we can get that spot and maybe do something."
