The 27-year-old only moved to Ewood Park in January on a free transfer from America's Major League Soccer.
Nelsen had played all his career in the US after joining DC United in 2001, until he moved to England.
Rovers took him on after a trial spell, and he has now emerged as a main-stay in Mark Hughes's side after a string of impressive displays.
Nelsen is now set to open talks over a new deal after a number of rival clubs were alerted to his ability.
"This is a great club and I owe Blackburn a lot, so of course I want to stay here," said the New Zealander.
"I'm really enjoying myself. I know my agent and the club are in talks at the moment but I'm just concentrating on playing, I don't really get involved in stuff like that, I leave all that to the suits.
"Talks have only just started but I'm just concentrating on trying to win games for Blackburn. That's all I'm worried about right now."
