The player's agent revealed earlier this week that Sunderland were one of the clubs interested in Stead.
Sunderland have held a long-term interest in Stead and tried to sign him before he made the move to Blackburn last year.
Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy has rekindled his interest in Stead and hopes to bring him to the Stadium of Light as Sunderland prepare for life back in The Premiership.
Blackburn are willing to let Stead leave after he struggled to recapture the form he showed initially after arriving at Ewood Park.
Sunderland could now face a fight for Stead's signature with another club registering an interest in his services.
The mystery club along with Sunderland have agreed an undisclosed fee with Blackburn and it is now up to the player who he decides to join.
