Sunderland are about to secure signing of Ipswich keeper Kelvin Davis
Sunderland should seal the long-expected signing of Kelvin Davis later on Tuesday - when the Ipswich goalkeeper finally manages to return from holiday.
Davis, 28, was meant to complete a duo of fresh captures on Monday evening - along with £1.8 million signing Jon Stead, who joined from Blackburn - but his plane was delayed in a Spanish airport.
Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy was forced to unveil Stead alone, but hopes to finalise the deal taking former Wimbledon keeper Davis to The Stadium Of Light as soon as possible.
"It has not been the best day I have ever had," Davis fumed to Ipswich's official website.
"I am on holiday with my family at the moment, but was due to fly back to Britain today and travel to Sunderland to sort out the final details.
"I got to Malaga Airport to catch a flight around 10am, but the plane broke down and I had to sit in the airport waiting for the problem to be solved.
"It got to around 6pm and that was enough for me. I am back with my family and will stay overnight in Spain before hopefully catching a flight in the morning to Newcastle.
"It looks like everything will be finalised on Tuesday and I will sign for Sunderland then."
McCarthy preceded the signing of Stead by snapping up Waterford striker Daryl Murphy and Gillingham defender Nyron Nosworthy.
