The Royals sit bottom of the top-flight table at Christmas, with 18 games having brought just one win and nine points.
Reading have it all to do if they to avoid making an immediate return to the Championship, but will have the opportunity to bolster their ranks in January.
McDermott is already drawing up transfer plans ahead of the New Year and is looking to bring in tried and tested performers at the highest level - with Blackburn keeper Paul Robinson, Tottenham midfielder Tom Huddlestone and Liverpool playmaker Joe Cole reported to be on his wish list.
"I feel strongly we need to sign two or three players with Premier League experience, who know what it is like to play in this league," he said.
"January is a hard window but we have been planning for some time and will make some signings."
