Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce stresses the importance of their Championship match against Newcastle

Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce admits he would take any kind of win from Monday night's huge Sky Bet Championship clash with Newcastle.

Bruce's side go into the game at St James' Park, which you can see live on Sky Sports 1, on a run of four successive defeats and down in 17th place in the table.

The former Hull boss says he would take three points, even if they came via the flukiest goal ever, and almost went as far as issuing a prayer towards the end of his pre-match press conference.

Asked who he turned to in trying to change Villa's fortunes, Bruce pointed to the sky and said, with a smile: "The big man up here. Where are you? Where is he in my hour of need?"

"We've had an awful time. We thought there were shoots of recovery, getting back in amongst the other end of the table, but we've had an awful five or six weeks for whatever reason.

"We need a result. We will take anything at the moment.

"I'm not bothered about the performance - we need a result. In fact, we need a couple of good results. That's where we are.
