John Terry's goal for Aston Villa

John Terry got off the mark for Aston Villa as he netted the opening goal in their 2-1 win over Fulham on Saturday.

The veteran central defender, who was often among the scorers during his lengthy and illustrious career at Chelsea, nodded in a trademark header from a Conor Hourihane free-kick after 23 minutes at Villa Park in their Sky Bet Championship clash on Saturday.

Fulham then pegged Villa back just before the break through Stefan Johansen, but Albert Adomah struck shortly after half-time to secure the three points for the home side.

Steve Bruce's side are now fifth in the table, and he said: "I thought John Terry played very well and he is always going to chip in with a few goals."

He then added: "We are just about starting in the Championship for me. The winter is upon us and the marathon is starting. But we have made progress from where we were 12 months ago.

"We would like some more points after a poor start but we have dug deep and have only one defeat in 10 games. We are going in the right direction.
