The Villa supremo watched PSV Eindhoven`s 2-1 win over Parma on Thursday, and he is thought to have watched at least a couple of players he is known to be interested in.
Mark van Bommel and Dennis Rommedahl both starred for the Dutch champions and Gregory may well see both as potential signings, but a more likely target is Bjorn van der Doelen.
The 24-year-old midfielder (pictured) first caught Gregory`s eye after he played against Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Champions League earlier in the season. And since then PSV manager Erik Gerets has told the midfielder that he can leave the Philips Stadion.
"In an ideal world, we would be able to bring in a player before next week's game at Derby because we are still in need of strengthening," said Gregory.
"But the bigger picture is to ensure we know who we want and whether we have a chance of getting them in time to put together a powerful enough squad for next season.
"I still maintain we have a lot to play for this season but there is no reason why we should not also be thinking about the next stage.
"This trip is all about checking out certain players and their availability."
Gregory will also take in high-profile games in Italy and Spain over the weekend as he looks for talent to bolster his squad.
