The recent Copa America winner has been linked with a move to West Ham or Aston Villa in a deal worth around $8 million (£5.6 million).
River own 49 percent of the player's rights, and his agents are believed to be in talks with a number of clubs with Roma another of the sides reportedly in the frame, although the Serie A champions have played down their interest.
Villa boss John Gregory was previously keen on capturing Yepes when snapping up his compatriot Juan Pablo Angel but Olof Mellberg's arrival at Villa Park does perhaps suggest the centre of defence is no longer a priority area for the Midlanders.
West Ham's Glenn Roeder is desperate to sign a centre back, and Yepes is certainly a top class performer, but any delays in obtaining a work permit would be a strain for the East Londoners, who need new blood urgently.
If Yepes does leave, River are considering buying Rosario Central stopper Matias Lequi as a replacement.
Vice-president Alfredo Davicce has admitted that, despite financial problems at the club, River can still bring in new faces, as they remain keen on Jose 'Turu' Flores, the Deportivo La Coruna hit-man.
